Achievement Gaps - 1012 Words

Achievement Gaps Reading, writing and the ability to solve simple mathematical problems are a part of the necessary tools needed to survive in America. Consequently, such learning tools are used numerous times throughout the day without recognition. However, reading, writing and basic knowledge of mathematical problems are not equally achieved by all social groups. It is clear that education plays a major role in the future of an individual, yet there are achievement gaps between Black, White and Hispanic groups. Unfortunately, minority groups are not meeting the standard scoring according to statistics. White groups are exceeding Black and Hispanic groups in reading, writing, and mathematics. However, in 1999 to 2004 the gap for the age nine, in reading, was lower for a longer term than any other per iod. In the mathematic department, Black groups have grown significantly in 2005, while the White counterpart’s scores have not changed. Thus, causing the gaps between White and Black groups to be narrower in 2005. In 2005, Whites had a twenty-seven point lead over Blacks. The gap point gap in 2007 remained almost the same, with Whites having a twenty-six point lead in reading over Blacks. The reasons for the achievement gaps between Black and White groups are based on family income, social status, and poor schools. The conflict perspective best describes the achievement gaps for blacks and Hispanics. According to this conflict perspective, there is a constant struggle between the dominant group (whites) and the subordinate groups (blacks and Hispanics). Those that are a part of the dominant group have economic and political control. The subordinate group is often left ignored and ridiculed for having a lower status by the subordinate groups. Those who support the conflict theory also believe that the subordinate group is stereotyped as lazy and lack the knowledge and/or desire to narrow the gap between blacks, Hispanics and whites; that is subsequently known as â€Å"blaming the victim†. Rhetorical Analysis Of `` What The Hell Is Water `` By...

Famed American author David Foster Wallace gave a commencement speech to Kenyon College’s graduating class of 2005. Most commencement speeches focus on graduates’ accomplishments as well as give general life advice. Wallace’s presentation follows this pattern at first, congratulating the students on getting their diplomas. However, most of his speech is dedicated to the idea of thinking beyond ourselves. Throughout the speech, Wallace argues we should live with empathy through his use of humor and appeals to the audience’s empathy. The introduction quickly introduces the humorous tone found throughout the piece with his use of anecdotes. In the opening anecdote, two young fish fail to recognize that they are surrounded by water. By juxtaposing the academic setting with the fish exclaiming â€Å"what the hell is water?† the speaker creates humor with the fish’s unexpected colloquialism. Furthermore, Wallace connects the irony of the fish anecd ote with the that of most adults, who are unable to see what really matters in life just as the fish can not see the water that encompasses them. The speaker follows this story with another about an atheist and a theist arguing about the existence of God. By refusing to see the other’s perspective, Wallace shows the humor in their rigid belief systems. The speaker also pokes fun at his liberal arts audience by asking why they accept both men’s position without questioning their rationale for doing so. By doing so, Wallace displays audienceShow MoreRelatedEssay about Wallace Rhetorical Analysis1393 Words   |  6 PagesA Rhetorical Analysis of â€Å"This is Water† If one were to try to imagine a world without air, then it would certainly be very different than the world as humans know it. Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management. Answer: Introduction: The overall assignment mainly depicts the use of adequate financial derivatives by portfolio managers to improve they all return from investment. Financial derivatives mainly comprises of 4 different types which allow it get investors to increased exposure in the market. The use of derivative mainly helps investors in hedging their overall exposure in the capital market. These derivative options also allow investors and Portfolio managers to adequately apply relevant investment theories and make exponential gains. The whole assignment mainly evaluates under hypothetical situation where all the four different types of the derivative instrument is evaluated and analysed. Lastly, the overall recommendation for portfolio managers, which could help in improving the overall give ability to increase profits by using different derivative instruments. Describing the four major financial derivatives used in portfolio management: There are different types of financial derivatives, which could be used by portfolio management these derivatives are depicted as follows. Forward contract derivative: Forward contracts derivatives are mainly identified as its simplest form of decorative instrument, which are applicable only for today. This is one of the oldest forms of contract, which are conducted by investors to hedge or control losses in future. The forward contract is mainly an agreement, which is made between two parties regarding sale of a product or instrument in later date. This instrument was widely used before the invention of future contracts. Many investors are still using the forward contracts effectively until day to conduct adequate exposure in the market. Berezhnoy et al. (2014) stated that forward contracts are mainly conducted between two parties or counterparties, where there is no exchange responsible for the transaction. On the other hand, Bodie (2013)argued that use of future contracts does not allow oroblige the other party to keep commitment regarding the contract. Details of the forward contracts can be kept secret from the public, as it is not mandatory to provide relevant details regarding the transaction. Forward contract mainly allowed investors to effectively control the rising prices and reduce any kind of losses, which might income from volatile capital market. Forward contract are currently used in currency exchange, which are conducted by the bank (Dutta 2016). Example of a forward contract: Particulars Value Value AUD payment 1,000,000 Current AUD/USD Rate 0.75 = 1,000,000 * 0.75 = 750,000 Forward Contract Rate 0.73 = 1,000,000 * 0.73 = 730,000 Expected AUD/USD Rate 0.72 = 1,000,000 * 0.72 = 720,000 Reduction in losses 10,000 A firm using AUD USD rate for reducing any kind of volatility in the exchange market for the payment that needs to be converted in USD.The overall use of forward contract mainly helps in reducing the losses by $10,000. This was made possible by using the forward contract, which fixed the overall exchange rate and reduced any kind of risk that may be faced by the person exchanging the payment. This mainly helps investors to fix their overall exchange rate, which help in reducing any kind of risk from capital market (Fat and Pop 2015). Future contract derivative: Future contracts are a viable transaction, which is conducted with the help of an exchange and allows investors to make adequate investment decisions. This type of contract is mainly similar to forward contracts where sale of a particular commodity is conducted on a specified future date. However, the prices of that commodity are fixed in the current date, which helps in reducing any kind of price volatility that might think in later date. Future contracts use exchanges and are conducted through a medium, which allows and obliges different parties to fulfil their part of the bargain (Frino, Mollica and Webb 2014). Future contracts conducted on a pre designed format, which needs to be followed by an investor while conducting investments and transaction. Furthermore, the future contracts mainly follow a daily settlement contract format, where all the gains and losses are realised on the given day after commencement of the trading day. In future contracts buyers and sellers does not form any kind of contract enter or enter in an agreement, they simply transact with the exchange. Thus, exchange is mainly responsible for all the transactions conducted under the future contracts and is liable to pay the parties. Example of a future contract: Particulars Value Value Buying Gold 100 ounce Current Gold price 1258.63 = 100 * 1258.63 = 125,863 Future contract 1265 = 100 * 1265 = 126,500 Expected Price 1350 = 100 * 1350 = 135,000 Reduction in losses 8500 From the overall evaluation of Future contracts example it would be understood that reduction of $8,500 worth of value in Gold buying bus conductor. This reduction was mainly achieved by using a futures contract, which help in locking the current prices of the gold and allowed investors to effectively reduce extensive losses in buying the gold commodity. This type of extensive used mainly allows investors to effectively improve their current financial exposures in the market (Hou 2017). Option contract derivative: Option contract derivative is the third option, which is used by investors to effectively Hedge the exposure in the capital market. The option contract mainly allows investors effectively hedge against any kind of future volatility that might be expected by them. There is simply two types of options, which are used extensively by investors first is the call option second is the put option. Call option is mainly a right, which allows investor to buy something at later date at a given price (Johnson 2015). However, put option mainly allows investors to sell something at later date at a given price. Furthermore, option contract provides an effective choice to the traders as they could conduct the trade in future date or not. This relevant choice mainly allows investors to effectively speculate the market and reduce any kind of extensive losses, which might be conducted during the investment Period. The option contract is mainly conducted with the help of an exchange, as adequate measures need to be taken when option trades are conducted. Option trades mainly allow investors to increase their exposure in the market with relevant small premium provided by them. The investor at the cost of the premium could ignore any losses that might incur in future. Currently option contracts at high demand among investors, as it allows them to produce any kind of risk and increase their investment capacity. Option contracts is conducted based on prices related to a certain instrument, these options are conducted based on future price volatility to increase their gains from investment. The main expense, which is incurred by the option contractors, is the premium amount that they are charged for exercising the trades. The use of premium amount mainly allows investors to reduce the overall capital blockage, which were previously conducted in future contracts and help to increase their investment capacity. Khumawala, Ranasinghe and Yan (2016) argued that due to the option trading system speculators and novice traders are able to inflate and create volatility in the market, which in turn reduces market efficiency. Example of a option contract: Particulars Value Value Selling shares of Apple 1000 Buying Put Option Current price 152.96 1000 * 152.96 = 152,960 Strike price 150 1000 * 150 = 150,000 Premium 5 1000 * 5 = 5,000 Expected Price 140 1000 * 140 = 140,000 Actual Price 149 1000 * 149 = 153,000 Reduction in losses 145,000 -149,000 = 4000 loss According to the example portrayed in the above table, option price of Apple did not follow to the relevant speculation of $140. This mainly increased the losses of the investor my $4,000 as the investor invested in a strike price on $150 and premium of $5. This mainly indicated that prices of Apple went below $145 then the investor could get good return from investment. Thus, the price only went down by 149 dollars, which resulted in a loss of $4,000 by the investor. If the investor does not choose to take the trade then he has to pay premium of $5,000, which is greater than the loss that was incurred (Lievenbruck and Schmid 2014). Swaps derivative: The most complicated type of contract in derivative is the swap contract, which involves adequate speculation and relevant research before conducting the trade. Swap derivatives are mainly conducted on different participants where one investor uses the fixed rate for a floating rate interest to increase its overall gains from investment. The swap trades allow investors to swap interest rates and underlying currency for increasing the overall financial income. With the help of swap trades companies are able to avoid foreign exchange rates, which might hamper the overall return from investment.Swap trades mainly conducted by private contractors to negotiate between two parties to get the relevant benefit from the spread (Neuberger 2016). Swap trades are mainly conducted by investment bankers between the two parties, as it helps in reducing any kind of risk from investment. However, swap trades mainly increase the overall risk from currency exchange rate, which might hamper and reduce an y kind of income that might be generated from the investment. Amount to be invested 100,000 Interest rate 1st country Interest rate 2nd country Exchange rate 4 0.25 Savings 8% 3% Loan 9% 4% Invested amount 400,000 Interest received 32,000 Converted to 2nd country 8,000 Invested amount 100,000 Invested paid 3,000 Total income 5,000 From the overall evaluation of the example, it could be understood that Investment in first country could eventually help in gaining interest of 32000, which converted to 8000. In addition, a loan in second country code eventually attracts a payment of 3000,which will make a total income of 5000 for the investor. This type of seed is mainly identified as a swap trade, which is conducted by companies and investors to increase their overall investment (Norden, Buston and Wagner 2014). Analysing the desirability of using in derivatives in hypothetical situations with adequate critics: After the overall evaluation of the four different types of derivative instruments option contract and futures contract is mainly identified, as the most viable investment option. As this will allow investors to conduct trades without any relevant risk. Thus, the hypothetical situations in the above examples mainly depicts that use of option trading and future trading could eventually help investors in making investment decisions and effectively conduct trades in the market (Pinzur 2016). However, forward contracts are elements used in the market, which should be avoided, by investors and Portfolio managers in their portfolio construction. In addition, swap trades also be avoided by the portfolio managers, as it only comprises of swap interest rates, which is a complicated endeavour conducted by companies. Thus, the use of future and option contracts could eventually help a portfolio manager to conduct and deliver the required rate of return from the investment. Recommendations and Conclusions: After the overall evaluation of the assignment, it could be understood that derivative contracts allow investors to adequately invest in the market. Investors to conduct relevant transactions in the market mainly use the derivative instruments such as forward, future, option, and swap contracts. However, the use of future and option contracts is relevantly higher in the market as it provides an effective measure for all the investors to increase their profitability. Therefore, it could be understood that the use of option contracts is mainly and adequate investment instrument, which could help investors in conducting high end trades. Thus, portfolio managers needs to use option and future contracts to effectively conduct and prepare their portfolios and obtain the relevant return from investment. The Republic Of Pakistan Essays - Dominion, Political Geography

The Republic of Pakistan Dominion Republic (Speech) Thank You, ladies and gentlemen. Now, we, The Republic of Pakistan, as we feel it is our sole duty to do so, would hereby like to take the opportunity to affirm and acknowledge the statements ejaculated by The Dominion Republic. First, we would like to state the present situation of Brazil: Brazil is in trouble! Economic crisis are just too much. Social distress is also pondering amongst the citizens. Dreams of a golden future have now practically run out. It is in so much trouble, that it holds the world largest foreign debt of $130 (Yes, one hundred and thirty), BILLION dollars! Ladies and gentlemen, there are numerous upon numerous examples which we can share with you to clarify how Brazil's economy is, to put it bluntly, IN THE PITS! But, you and I have already heard enough examples we need from The Dominion Republic themselves. It is no doubt that the government of Brazil is lacking in practically every respect. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE! We can not let this continue yet further, as it will then be even more difficult to come out of it later. Here is what the Dominion Republic purpose: To put a price freeze on all goods and services. What this would do, is result in a decrease of Brazilian inflation hence, saving the economy. This must be done! Ladies and gentlemen, there is a solution to every problem, unfortunately, the Brazilian government does not seem very interested in the remedies. HOWEVER, we, The Republic of Pakistan, feel that the opportunity should be given to The Dominion Republic to help assist in the damaged society. One may ask, why is Pakistan interested in such a resolution? Well, we know how governments are. They are interested PURELY IN THEMSELVES! The Brazilian government is just like the Kashmir government (but that's another speech). They do what he want, and do NOT give a 2 cents about the public. We know where The Dominion Republic is coming from, and we express our concern as such. So, please, ladies and gentlemen: Acknowledge the lack of decency the governments posses, and help us rise from this disaster; only with the help of the United Nations, can we overcome this dilemma. I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for listening to us thus far. And I also hope that you understand and acknowledge our concern, as well as the concern of The Dominion Republic. All our intentions are laid our clearly, we only hope that you will allow The Dominion Republic the opportunity to prove ourselves. Thank You.

The Importance of Cultural Approaches to Negotiation

The Importance of Cultural Approaches to Negotiation Negotiation occurs when individuals with conflict of the interests get together to determine how they would allocate resources or work together in the future. The ideas of both parties need to be well presented in the negotiation. Both parties should end up with equally benefiting outcomes.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Importance of Cultural Approaches to Negotiation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Negotiation results in problem solving to a common problem between the parties involved. Contradicting issues arise due to different schools of thought and cultural backgrounds. This is the reason why negotiation needs expertise when handling it. Negotiations in business involve open communication, understanding the conflict and search for the solution by the involved parties. Different cultures approach negotiations differently and thus, utmost understanding is required (Hendon, Hendon Herbig, 1996).The main purp ose of this paper is to discuss the cultural approaches used in negotiations. It will explain five cultural approaches used by the Chinese and their effectiveness if applied in the United States of America. Different cultures approach negotiation differently. This is because of the differences in their traditions and beliefs. Negotiators’ cultural background is reflected during negotiation process through the way they think and are sensitivity to the issues. The approaches used in different cultures have their advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the different cultural approaches to negotiations especially when dealing with foreigners. If this is not done it may lead to frustrations of the two parties and this is likely to bring enmity, which is not good for business investors (Hendon, Hendon Herbig, 1996). The Chinese culture is renowned for persistence and coherence. It is rooted in religio-philosophical traditions of Taoism, Buddhism, Con fucianism, Pantheistic and Animist beliefs. Confucianism, for example, is associated with the subtle and tacit but forceful social moral and behavioral code in China. Social harmony is another element of Chinese culture that gives a non-interventionist, outer directed and situation-accepting orientation. This allows the Chinese maintain harmony with their counterparts. Besides this, they place the negotiation on a wider context in understanding of the underlying principles. The Chinese also take responsibility for the decisions made and are less likely to result in overt conflicts during the negotiation.Advertising Looking for essay on communication strategies? Thus, the Chinese negotiators will take negotiation as a relationship building process. In this regard, they ensure that a good relati onship is maintained during and after the negotiation (Li Weldon, 2000). Their cultures require them to be implicit and indirect and this is reflected in their negotiation style. They are more sensitive and practice proper etiquette in their dealings. They are also governed by reciprocity and therefore, they expect concessions in return. In addition, they show patience in their negotiations and more likely to place a negotiation in a historical context. They deal with issues as a package rather than one issue at a time and they are comfortable with long-term negotiations. Another cultural factor is contingency propositions. This means that they display more caution and they are more assertive as well as open to the pursuit of self (Li Weldon, 2000). On the other hand, the objective of American negotiators is to arrive at legalistic contracts. They thrive in getting the details right and using all relationships to facilitate the achievement of unambiguous understandings. They focus on the short-term solution and they are result oriented. They prefer a competitive environment with the intent of solving problems and they expect reciprocity. The law binds them and they honor their contracts no matter the results of the outcome. The Americans negotiate expecting immediate results. They see delays as a sign of ineptitude and they deal with perceived insensitivity. Their tendency to getting straight to the point mostly leads to failures in negotiations (Hendon, Hendon Herbig, 1996). Therefore, there are distinct differences between the American cultural approach to negotiation and the Chinese cultural approach to negotiation. The Chinese approach is humanitarian and if applied in the United States, it is bound to bring about positive changes. However, its effectiveness will solely depend on how this culture is embraced. Most American investors have built their negotiation skills on western culture and it may be a challenge to adopt new changes. However, some of th e Chinese cultural approaches to negotiation are possible to be incorporated into the United States culture (Li Weldon, 2000).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Importance of Cultural Approaches to Negotiation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For example, the Chinese’s collective way of thinking will do well if it replaces the American’s individualistic way of thinking. This way, it is possible for an American negotiator to put himself in the shoes of another person and view the negotiation in a broader perspective. The Americans may see the sensitivity with which the Chinese handle negotiations as a weak point but if incorporated in the US culture, it is likely to help build long-term relationships following a negotiation (Lam, 2000). The Americans are always in haste in their business dealings. Adapting the formal long-term relationship building of the Chinese culture at the negotiation table may help them pay close attention to details of the issue and understand their counterparts. It is also possible to replace the impatient and aggressive tendency of the Americans with the more subdued patient spirit of the Chinese. The Americans are result oriented and they are likely to close businesses deal in their favor even if their counterparts get furious over it. This can also be overcome by the Chinese’s long-term perspective, which helps them have better deals and hence become better business investors (Lam, 2000). In conclusion, negotiation skills are shaped by negotiator’s culture. In order to avoid enmity when solving conflicts, the negotiators need to understand each other’s culture. Each culture has its pros and cons when approaching the negotiation table. Therefore, it is the role of the negotiators to learn and appreciate the other parties’ cultures. It is also necessary to incorporate the pros of different cultural approaches to be able to m aximize opportunities in international and national business (Hendon, Hendon Herbig, 1996). Well, all adverbs end in -ly, and no adjectives do, right? Wrong on both counts. Some adverbs, called flat adverbs, lack the -ly suffix. The words in this category, like straight, can be used both as adverbs (â€Å"Drive straight through the intersection†) and adjectives (â€Å"He drew a straight line†). Some adverbs, like slow, are interchangeable with their -ly forms (see this post). Others, like hard, are distinct in usage from the adverbial -ly form (â€Å"I worked hard† is opposite in meaning from â€Å"I hardly worked†) and have no adjectival -ly form. At the same time, dozens of adjectives end in -ly, and many have no adverbial equivalent. (Some adjectives that pertain to periods of time, such as daily, weekly, and monthly, can be both adjectives and adverbs: â€Å"They followed a daily regimen†; â€Å"They followed the regimen daily.†) For example, friendly can modify a noun (â€Å"She wore a friendly smile†), but although one can write, â€Å"She looked friendly,† it means she had a friendly look, not that she looked at someone in a friendly manner. (Friendly is not an adverb; friendlily is, though I’ve never seen it used, and one must otherwise use the adverbial phrase in the previous sentence, or a similar one, in place of friendly.) Other adjectives ending in -ly that are not also adverbs include costly (â€Å"It was a costly event†), miserly (â€Å"That’s a miserly attitude†), and unruly (â€Å"He’s an unruly boy†). One cannot, for example, act costly, miserly, or unruly; one is said, for example, to spend in a costly manner, to behave in a miserly fashion, or to engage in unruly behavior. Adjectives ending in -y can be converted to adverbs with the insertion of -il- before the final letter, as in frosty (â€Å"She gave him a frosty look†) becoming frostily (â€Å"She looked at him frostily†), but, friendlily notwithstanding, few adjectives can be converted to adverbs in this manner. For example, â€Å"She gave him a deadly look† is correct, but â€Å"She looked at him deadlily is not.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
