Analysis of “The Happy Man”
Iââ¬â¢m going to examine a novel ââ¬Å"The Happy Manâ⬠by Somerset Maugham, a notable English author, short-story essayist, writer and writer. William Somerset Maugham was conceived in Paris, instructed at Kingââ¬â¢s school in Canterbury and concentrated to be a specialist at St. Thomas Hospital in England. He was outstanding amongst other referred to scholars of his time as he was ace of short stories. The story begins with the storyteller thinking and educating the peruser concerning his mentality to offering guidance to someone. He believes it to be very troublesome and even difficult to offer the correct guidance as ââ¬Å"we remain unaware of the othersâ⬠.The entire first section of the story is dedicated to the narratorââ¬â¢s communicating the assessment on life, the way of average society and the risk of requesting the lives of others. At that point the creator continues recounting to a story that once happened to the storyteller. This epic runs about an ed gy man who trusted his life to an all out outsider. The subject of the novel: a manââ¬â¢s scan for satisfaction; the job of counsel in the life of individuals. The principle characters of the story are the storyteller and Stephens. The principle character is the narrator. There is no any data about his appearance in the content. The just a single thing about his age is the data that he was a youngster when he prompted well. By and by we can decide about his character from his considerations, conduct and discourse. The depiction of his character is backhanded. He is an insightful man: he realizes that it is difficult to realize another people just as oneself to give him/her recommendation which would be beneficial for him/her. What's more, he is striking enough for a man who sets out to offer the extraordinary guidance to a man he see for the first time. The storyteller was a shrewd, cunning and brilliant. We can decide by his method of portrayal, discourse. He is an informed indivi dual, he utilizes scholarly jargon for the most part, for example, such words as task, struggle, nauseous, hushes. Meaning of words is sure and the manner in which the writer utilizes the writing groups makes the story justifiable and near the perusers. He was a specialist yet didnââ¬â¢t practice. What's more, most importantly he was an essayist. He was an accomplished individual, rationalist and great analyst, since he could state without a doubt who the man was and what life was.He considered life and attempted to comprehend the estimation of life. ââ¬ËAnd life is something that you can lead however onceâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ He is capable man. He has a sharp eye for subtleties which uncover Stephensââ¬â¢ inward state: he (Stephens) had some trouble in lighting cigarette without giving up off his cap. He immediately did this and keeping in mind that doing it dropped his umbrella. Stephensââ¬â¢ depiction is abstract and the peruser sees everything from the narratorââ¬â¢s pe rspective. Stephens speak to and pictures. The first is Stephens who lives in London. He delicate and enthusiastic, the evidence is being the use of representations and sobriquets in his discourse. ââ¬Å"Each one assistance of this illustration the creator shows the narratorââ¬â¢s attitude toward the relations among individuals and the difficulty of realizing an individual all around ok to give him adviceâ⬠. The following analogy: ââ¬Å"There are men who flop at the journeyââ¬â¢s start is planned for making discourse increasingly brilliant and fascinating, so the entire scene promptly introduces itself to the readerââ¬â¢s eyeâ⬠It is a troubled man, exhausted with his life, who doesnââ¬â¢t discover air one can take in London.Stephensââ¬â¢ inward express, his feelings are portrayed through the narratorââ¬â¢s assessment of Stephensââ¬â¢ sentences. He discovers striking and sharp. These designations are utilized by the creator to show that Stephens could n't generally stick his life any more. He is tired of the daily practice of being a clinical official since that was all he needed to look forward the far the remainder of life. Indeed, even great cash of London canââ¬â¢t prevent him from inclining for a vulnerability in Spain. The subsequent picture, that is an upbeat man, and he is introduced by Stephensââ¬â¢ living in Spain. He happy with his life however he is somewhat pitifully dressed. The satisfaction and substance with life can be seen through all the narratorââ¬â¢s depiction of Stephens appearance: his eyes twinkled joyously, his face bore and demeanor of impeccable affableness. This illustration encourages us to get the possibility of Stephensââ¬â¢ bliss. The misrepresentation Stephens utilizes ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t trade the existence I have had that of any lord in wouldâ⬠shows the most elevated level of being glad. Another misrepresentation utilized by the creator ââ¬Å"you couldnââ¬â¢t have envis ioned a progressively great animal to drink a glass of wineâ⬠with is planned for uncovering the authorââ¬â¢s uplifting demeanor to Stephens. So, the two pictures a ââ¬Å"happy and troubled manâ⬠are against one another. The complex gadget utilized for this situation, it is the difference, its capacity is to acquire a few marvels resistance and find separate highlights. This Stylistic gadget causes us to express the fundamental thought of the story, which contorts around the subject of joy. Stephens discovered his joy in Spain, where is air one can inhale while in London there was no opportunities for him to appreciate life. The complexity among Spain and London shows the disadvantage of Londonââ¬â¢s society in which Stephens wouldnââ¬â¢t like to live any longer. While his better half, who liked to return to Camberwell, discovered her joy there. Along these lines the principle thought expresses that each individual has his own comprehension of joy. We can partition the novel into three consistent parts so as to comprehend it better. It is a story content. The key in the initial segment is fairly critical, profoundly psycological, and some of the time we can say that it is somewhat negative. This could be demonstrated in the event that we take a gander at the illustrations the creator use: he analyzes each man to ââ¬Å"a detainee in a lone towerâ⬠, life to ââ¬Å"a troublesome businessâ⬠. Another similitude is utilized when he says that ââ¬Å"some individuals flop at the journeyââ¬â¢s startâ⬠.So we see that the writer attempts to prepare us for the future mishaps, and to show us the contrast between the past ââ¬Å"wrapped in obscurity haze of Destinyâ⬠and what's to come. The subsequent part was written as an exchange between the patient and our saint. We can see the surrender all expectations regarding an outsider, since he utilizes ââ¬Å"short, sharp sentencesâ⬠, to stress it the creator disclosed to us that t hey had ââ¬Å"a persuasive ringâ⬠. The guest is by all accounts extremely worn out on life, he is latent, yet he needs to change something in it, that is the reason to show us the adversarial character of the guest, the creator utilizes a paradoxical expression ââ¬Å"bright dull eyesâ⬠.The third part is melodious, and somewhat sentimental. In the third part, our principle character comes to Seville, and attempts to locate that more peculiar. He lived in a conventional Spanish house, his room was covered with papers, books, clinical machines and wood yet he was extremely upbeat. It could be seen from his portrayal: a dispersed, however antirely thoughtful appearance, and obviously from his mumbling ââ¬Å"Life is brimming with compensationsâ⬠. The complex gadgets, utilized in the story, make the portrayal additionally intriguing and pulling in readersââ¬â¢ consideration. They uncover the object of portrayal in a profound way and make the portrayal more emotional.T he creator utilizes the difference fair and square of the content. With its assistance he passes on the fundamental thought of the content, his demeanor to the characters. The linguistic example isn't troublesome and it doesnââ¬â¢t do any trouble to follow the fundamental thought. Somerset Maugham doesnââ¬â¢t utilize numerous subtleties. Each pre-owned detail is significant from the authorââ¬â¢s see point and painstakingly chose. So the creator utilized such complex gadgets as analogy: ââ¬Ëa detainee in singular towerââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëdark shroud of Destinyââ¬â¢ and so on. The storyteller shows the perusers his mentality towards life, ponders the estimation of life. Metaphor ââ¬ËI wouldnââ¬â¢t trade the life.Iââ¬â¢ve had with that of any lord in the worldââ¬â¢ is utilized to show that Stephens was extremely upbeat and wasnââ¬â¢t worried about material things. In this way, additionally in the story there is a reversal and reiteration ââ¬ËPoor I have be en and poor I generally beââ¬â¢. Equal linguistic developments, for example, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢I was, I never, Iââ¬â¢ve never doneâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢, ââ¬Ëthere is daylight, there is acceptable wineâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ underline the significance of what Stephens told. The sentences in the story are somewhat basic and complete, the sections are adjusted. Additionally, there are non-serious inquiries with the assistance of them the creator attempts to comprehend what the estimation of life are. There are a great deal of direct opposite: ââ¬ËStephensââ¬â¢s pay was quite acceptable, however his garments where shabbyââ¬â¢, first and foremost he was a despondent man and at long last he was a glad one, Spain â⬠is brimming with feelings, opportunity, sentimental, and England is traditionalist. Suggestions: Carmen â⬠an image of Spain, of opportunity and so forth. The content is an enlightening one; there are numerous unmistakable signs: an unassuming condo, an all out more pecul iar, a regretful snicker, a quick look, a little man, a magnificent life, piddling indisposition, a queasy patient, a diminish memory, a Spanish lady and others. Unmistakable words make the content expressive and vivid. The creator utilizes numerous logical equivalents, which make the language expressive: perilous, dangerous; reluctantly, constrained; befuddled, humiliated; a complete more bizarre, an ideal outsider; modify, change; twinkled, shone. The story is committed to the issue of humanââ¬â¢s capacity to transform him. For certain individuals it is hard to carry on with another life and they like to be similarly for their entire lives. We shouldnââ¬â¢t fear new changes, in light of the fact that ââ¬Å"life is brimming with compensationsâ⬠. On the off chance that an individual is hesitant to face challenges and change his l

Things are not always as they appear
Things are not always as they appear There was once a man who was ship-wrecked and stranded on an island. Every day he prayed asking God to send someone to rescue him, but to his disappointment, no one ever came.Months passed and this man learned how to survive on the island. During this time, he accumulated things from the island and stored them in a hut that he constructed. One day after hunting for food and returning back to his hut, much to his dismay he saw that his hut was on fire along with everything else he owned! All of his possessions were going up in smoke! The only thing he had left were the clothes on his back. Initially he was in shock, and then he was consumed with anger and rage! In his fury he threw a fist into the air and began cursing God and yelling, âGod, how could you let this happen to me? Iâve been praying everyday for months about being rescued and no one has come, and now everything that I have is on fire! How could you do to this to me! Why did you let this happen?âLater the man was on his hands and knees weeping heavily when he happened to look up and catch sight of a ship coming in his direction. The man was rescued and as they were heading back to civilization the man asked the captain, âHow were you able to find me?âThe captain responded, âWe were voyaging across the ocean when we noticed on the horizon a column of smoke going up. We decided to go check it out and when we did, thatâs when we found you!âIn life we are going to be confronted with challenges, problems, and disasters. But keep in mind that what the devil has meant for bad, God can transform into your good! What is a catastrophe can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. âThe righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.â Psalms 34:17-19Author Unknown Story submitted by: W illiam G

Analysis of Feathers, a Short Story by Raymond Carver
American poet and author Raymond Carver (1938 ââ¬â 1988) is one of those rare writers who is known, likeà Alice Munro, primarily for his work in the short story form. Due to his economical use of language, Carver is often associated with a literary movement known as minimalism, but he himself objected to the term. In a 1983 interview, he said, Theres something about minimalist that smacks of smallness of vision and execution that I dont like. Feathers is the opening story of Carvers 1983 collection, Cathedral, in which he began to move away from the minimalist style. Plot of Feathers SPOILER ALERT: If you dont want to know what happens in the story, dont read this section. The narrator, Jack, and his wife, Fran, are invited to dinner at the home of Bud and Olla. Bud and Jack are friends from work, but no one else in the story has met before. Fran is not enthusiastic about going.à Bud and Olla live in the country and have a baby and a pet peacock. Jack, Fran, and Bud watch television while Olla prepares dinner and occasionally tends to the baby, who is fussing in another room. Fran notices a plaster cast of very crooked teeth sitting on top of the television. When Olla enters the room, she explains that Bud paid for her to have braces, so she keeps the cast to remind me how much I owe Bud. During dinner, the baby begins fussing again, so Olla brings him to the table. He is shockinglyà ugly, butà Fran holds himà and delights in him in spite of his appearance. The peacock is permitted inside the house and plays gently with the baby. Later that night, Jack and Fran conceive a child even though they had not previously wanted children. As the years pass, their marriage sours and their child demonstrates a conniving streak. Fran blames their problems on Bud and Olla even though she saw them only on that one night. Wishes Wishes play a prominent role in the story. Jack explains that he and Fran regularly wished out loud for things we didnt have, like a new car or the chance to spend a couple of weeks in Canada. They dont wish for children because they dont want children. It is clear that the wishes arent serious. Jack acknowledges as much when he describes approaching Bud and Ollas house: I said, I wish we had us a place out here. It was just an idle thought, another wish that wouldnt amount to anything. In contrast, Olla is a character who has actually made her wishes come true. Or rather, she and Bud together have made her wishes come true. She tells Jack and Fran: I always dreamed of having me a peacock. Since I was a girl and found a picture of one in a magazine. The peacock is loud and exotic. Neither Jack nor Fran has ever seen one before, and it is much more dramatic than any of the idle wishes theyve been making. Yet Olla, an unassuming woman with an ugly baby and teeth that needed straightening, has made it a part of her life. Blame Though Jack would place the date later, Fran believes their marriage began to deteriorate precisely on the night they had dinner at Bud and Ollas, and she blames Bud and Olla for it. Jack explains: Goddamn those people and their ugly baby, Fran will say, for no apparent reason, while were watching TV late at night. Carver never makes it clear exactly what Fran blames them for, nor does he make it clear exactly why the dinner gathering inspires Jack and Fran to have a baby. Perhaps its because Bud and Olla seem so happy with their strange, squawking-peacock, ugly-baby lives. Fran and Jack dont think they want the particulars ââ¬â a child, a house in the country, and certainly not a peacock ââ¬â yet perhaps they find they do want the contentedness that Bud and Olla seem to have. And in some ways, Olla does give the impression that her happiness is a direct result of the particulars of her situation. Olla compliments Fran on her naturally straight teeth while she herself had required braces ââ¬â and Buds devotion ââ¬â to fix her crooked smile. At one point, Olla says, You wait until you get our own baby, Fran. Youll see. And as Fran and Jack are leaving, Olla even hands Fran some peacock feathers to take home. Gratitude Butà Fran seems to be missing one fundamental element that Olla has: gratitude. When Olla explains how grateful she is to Bud for straightening her teeth (and, more generally, giving her a better life), Fran doesnt hear her because she is picking through the can of nuts, helping herself to the cashews. The impression is that Fran is self-centered, so focused on her own needs that she cant even hear someone elses expression of gratitude. Similarly, it seems symbolic that when Bud says grace, Olla is the only one who says amen. Where Happiness Comes From Jack does note one wish that came true: What I wished for was that Id never forget or otherwise let go of that evening. Thats one wish of mine that came true. And it was bad luck for me that it did. The evening seemed very special to him, and it left him feeling good about almost everything in my life. But he and Fran may have miscalculated where that good feeling was coming from, thinking it came from having things, like a baby, rather than feeling things, like love and appreciation.
